| JUTAIPSU® NA sheet is a candidate material for insulating frames, support plates, spacer components and selected structural parts used in alkaline water electrolyzer stacks. PSU combines hydrolysis resistance, resistance to alkaline aqueous environments, dimensional stability, compressive strength, electrical insulation and lower density than many metal alternatives. Final material selection must be validated according to electrolyte concentration, temperature, pressure, compression load, component design and required operating life. | |||||||||
Alkaline water electrolyzers operate under demanding combinations of aqueous alkaline media, temperature, pressure, electrical potential and long-term compression.
These operating conditions create challenges for conventional metal components, including corrosion protection, weight, processing complexity and electrical isolation.
JUTAIPSU® NA polysulfone sheet can be evaluated for insulating frames, support plates, spacer components and other structural parts used in AWE electrolyzer stacks.
PSU offers a useful combination of hydrolysis resistance, chemical resistance, dimensional stability, mechanical strength, electrical insulation and thermoplastic machinability.
Natural unfilled PSU is an electrically insulating material.
It should be described as a material for electrolyzer frames, insulating components, support structures and selected non-conductive parts.
It should not automatically be described as a conductive bipolar plate.
Applications requiring electrical conductivity must use a specifically developed conductive compound, and conductivity, contact resistance, chemical stability and long-term electrochemical performance must be validated separately.
Selected PSU grades provide resistance to hydrolysis and many aqueous alkaline environments.
Actual compatibility depends on:
• KOH or electrolyte concentration
• Operating temperature
• Stack pressure
• Exposure time
• Mechanical compression
• Residual machining stress
• Component geometry
• Cleaning and maintenance conditions
Application testing under the customer’s real operating conditions is required.
PSU retains useful mechanical and dimensional properties during prolonged exposure to hot water and aqueous environments.
This makes it a candidate for stack components exposed to water, electrolyte and changing operating temperatures.
Electrolyzer frame components are exposed to continuous stack-compression forces.
PSU provides good mechanical strength and creep resistance, but final frame thickness, bolt loading, sealing pressure and expected lifetime must be evaluated during component design.
Natural PSU provides electrical insulation between adjacent metallic, electrode or current-carrying components.
This property can help reduce the need for separate insulating elements in selected frame designs.
PSU has a substantially lower density than most metallic frame materials.
Replacing selected metal structures with engineered plastic components can reduce stack weight and simplify handling, subject to mechanical and pressure validation.
PSU can be machined into complex frame geometries, sealing grooves, fluid channels, bolt patterns, positioning features and integrated structural details.
For serial production, molded component development may also be evaluated according to quantity, tooling and component design.

No. Natural unfilled PSU is electrically insulating. Conductive bipolar plates require a validated conductive formulation and separate electrical and electrochemical testing.
Potential components include frames, insulating plates, spacers, support structures, manifolds, gasket supports and separator-support components.
Selected PSU grades can provide useful resistance in alkaline aqueous environments, but resistance depends strongly on KOH concentration, temperature, mechanical stress and exposure time. Customer-specific testing is required.
